The Easiest Way to Repurpose Empty Jars
Give new life to your empty food jars by turning them into cute canisters to keep your home organized. I use this one here for q-tips on my bathroom counter but you can store anything at all in one of these. repurpose a short jar, like my queso jar, to hold little things like cotton balls or tooth picks. Or you can make one out of a taller jar to hold pencils, make-up brushes, or dog treats. The possibilities are endless.
Be green and repurpose your empty jars!
Also cool: If you leave the lid unscrewed it easily lifts off for easy, everyday access (which is how I leave it for my q-tips) but you can also tighten the lid into place so your treasures don’t spill out should the jar get tipped over.
You can repurpose any empty glass jar in just three easy steps.
- Use a nail and hammer to make a hole in the center of your jar’s lid.
- Place your lid upside down on a scrap piece of wood. Position the nail in the center on the lid and give it a few firm taps with the hammer to create your hole.
- You can also use a drill for this if you prefer.
- Spray paint the lid your color of choice.
- Transfer your lid to a newspaper and spray it evenly all over. Let dry.
- Screw a cute knob into place on the top of your jar.
- There are endless options on Amazon!
- You may have to pick up a shorter screw than the one that comes with the knob. That should be easy to find at any hardware store. Just bring your knob along to make sure you’re getting the right size.
And that’s it! Decorative, practical, and super easy! Make a few of them to line your dresser, I’m sure you’ll just have to make more than one when you see all the adorable knob options out there! Wouldn’t these cat knobs make the cutest set of canisters ever?
Enjoy! and when you make one, send me a picture of your creation to be featured on my social media pages!

Now I have a real reason for keeping all those jars that are too good to throw away!!

I have been wanting to do this but thought I had to have a drill (which I don’t have). Now I can try this with a hammer and nail! Thanks!

Simply hammering the hole into it made the project SO easy! Best of luck with your project!
